Official: Japan wants peace treaty discussed with Putin in Dec

RUSSKY ISLAND, Primorsky Region, Sep 2 (PRIME) -- Tokyo expects to discuss a peace treaty with Russia during a visit of President Vladimir Putin to Japan scheduled for December 15, spokesman for the Japanese embassy Yasuhisa Kawamura told PRIME on Friday, after a meeting between Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“They have discussed bilateral issues and international problems, including the issue of the Northern Territories (Kuril Islands). They have had a wide and frank discussion,” Kawamura said.

He said that during Putin’s visit the officials “will discuss political and economic issues including the peace treaty.”

According to Kawamura, Putin and Abe are expected to meet in November at an APEC summit in Peru.
